    • Phylogenetic perspectives in innate immunity
    • This excellent review argues for a common ancestry of innate immunity in insects and mammals. It highlights recent results showing striking similarities in pathogen recognition, the components that transduce the signals and the effector mechanisms in Drosophila and mammalian defense response pathways. It also discusses the essential role of the innate immune response in regulating acquired immunity

This pathogenesis system was efficient at identifying P. aeruginosa virulence factors that are important for both C. elegans and mammalian pathogenesis. • Serpent regulates Drosophila immunity genes in the larval fat body through an essential GATA motif
    • This paper provides experimental evidence that, in addition to Rel-transcription factors, the GATA factor, Serpent, also plays an important role in regulating immunity-related genes. The authors show that Serpent-specific antibodies recognize a nuclear DNA-binding activity that interacts with the CECROPIN A1 GATA motif and that Serpent increases Cecropin A1 transcription in a GATA-dependent manner
