Although the structure of 2b was found identical to that of the recently presented solid-state dimerization product it has to be discussed here, because the former molecular structure has merely been used as starting geometry for moleclar modeling but not been discussed concerning its molecular properties, e. g. bond lengths.

Alternatively to the dimers 2, 3 and 4 with head-to-tail conjunction of the monomeric 4-aryl-1,4-dihydropyridines, the formation of the corresponding head-to-head-connected derivatives seems unlikely, at least for the possible syn dimers, due to steric hindrance of both ester groups at one cyclobutane bond.
