Ethnicity and patterns of spondyloarthritis in South Africa: Analysis of 100 patients
-
15 Burch VC, Isaacs S, Kalla AA: Ethnicity and patterns of spondyloarthritis in South Africa: analysis of 100 patients. J Rheumatol 1999, 26:2195-2200. A retrospective study of 100 new cases of spondyloarthropathy identified at the Rheumatology Disease Unit at the University of Cape Town between January 1988 and January 1995. Black ethnic groups make up at least 22% of the estimated 1.9 million residents of Cape Peninsula, but only five black patients (5%) (three with ankylosing spondylitis and two with reactive arthritis) were observed during the 7 years of the study.

Global trade and access to medicines: AIDS treatments in Thailand
-
49 Wilson D, Cawthome P, Ford N, Aongsonwang S: Global trade and access to medicines: AIDS treatments in Thailand. Lancet 1999, 354:1893-1895. This is a viewpoint expressed by the Medicins Sans Frontières branch in Thailand and discusses the increasing globalization of trade and its negative impact on public health in developing countries. The World Health Organization and nongovernmental organizations should prevent Western trade pressures that make it harder for the developing countries to forego their rights to produce and import the effective drugs at an affordable price.
