Long-term outcome of transcatheter coil closure of small to large patent ductus arteriosus

9 Patel HT, Cao QL, Rhodes J, Hijazi ZM: Long-term outcome of transcatheter coil closure of small to large patent ductus arteriosus. Cathet Cardiovasc Intervent 1999, 47:457-461. The immediate, short-, and mid-term outcomes of transcatheter coil closure of PDAs using Gianturco coils were reported. A total of 149 patients underwent the procedure without major complications. The median PDA minimal diameter was 2 mm (0.4 to 7 mm). Long-term follow-up of coil closure of PDA indicates that the technique is safe and effective for most patients with PDAs up to a diameter of 7 mm.

This study assessed the immediate and follow-up results of stent placement in 48 patients with coarctation of the aorta. Significant relief was always obtained and the isthmus, when hypoplastic, was always expanded with the stent.

Stent implantation for aortic coarctation and recoarctation
-
14 Magee AG, Brzezinska-Rajszys G, Qureshi SA, et al.: Stent implantation for aortic coarctation and recoarctation. Heart 1999, 82:600-606. This study determined the early results of stent implantation for aortic coarctation or recoarctation. Eighteen stents were implanted during 18 procedures in 17 patients. Immediate results of stent implantation for aortic recoarctation and native coarctation were good.

Transcatheter closure as standard treatment for most interatrial defects: Experience in 200 patients treated with the Amplatzer Septal Occluder
-
19 Berger F, Ewert P, Bjornstad PG, et al.: Transcatheter closure as standard treatment for most interatrial defects: experience in 200 patients treated with the Amplatzer Septal Occluder. Cardiol Young 1999, 9:468-473. The authors reported their experiences in 200 patients. Mean age was 29.8 years (0.8 to 77.7 years). Transcatheter closure of the ASD proved successful in all without any relevant residual shunts. The occlusion rate after 3 months was 98.1%. A trivial hemodynamically insignificant residual shunt remained in 1.9% of the patients. Closure of central ASDs up to a diameter of 28 mm can be performed with this device.

34 Amin Z, Gu X, Berry JM, et al.: New device for closure of muscular ventricular septal defects in a canine model. Circulation 1999, 100:320-328. This study reported experimental results of closing muscular VSDs with the Amplatz VSD device. Muscular VSDs were created in 10 dogs. The diameter of the defects ranged from 6 to 14 mm. The device was placed with the help of transesophageal echocardiography and fluoroscopy. Placement was successful in all animals. Pathologic examination of the heart revealed complete endothelialization of the device in dogs killed after 3 months.
