The immediate, short-, and mid-term outcomes of transcatheter coil closure of PDAs using Gianturco coils were reported. A total of 149 patients underwent the procedure without major complications. The median PDA minimal diameter was 2 mm (0.4 to 7 mm). Long-term follow-up of coil closure of PDA indicates that the technique is safe and effective for most patients with PDAs up to a diameter of 7 mm.

Cardiol Young 1999, 9:468-473. The authors reported their experiences in 200 patients. Mean age was 29.8 years (0.8 to 77.7 years). Transcatheter closure of the ASD proved successful in all without any relevant residual shunts. The occlusion rate after 3 months was 98.1%. A trivial hemodynamically insignificant residual shunt remained in 1.9% of the patients. Closure of central ASDs up to a diameter of 28 mm can be performed with this device.

The device was placed with the help of transesophageal echocardiography and fluoroscopy. Placement was successful in all animals. Pathologic examination of the heart revealed complete endothelialization of the device in dogs killed after 3 months.
