This paper reports on the cloning of the human ortholog of the multivitamin transporter. Conclusive evidence to prove the rheogenic nature of SMVT-mediated transport is provided in this paper. This study also demonstrates for the first time that lipoate is a transportable substrate for SMVT. Information on the chromosomal localization and the genomic organization of the human SMVT gene is also presented in this paper.
