This work was conducted at the Sugadaira Montane Research Center (SMRC), University of Tsukuba in Nagano, Japan. Yoshihisa Suyama was employed temporarily as a research associate at SMRC and is currently at the Department of Biodiversity Science, Tohoku University with interests in forest genetics. Kyoko Obayashi, who joined the work for her Bachelor of Science degree from College of Biological Sciences at the University of Tsukuba, is currently a graduate student at the University, studying Environmental Sciences and hopes to undertake a MSc on molecular ecology of Shorea (Dipterocarpaceae) species. Ichiroku Hayashi is the head of SMRC whose interests include plant ecology.
