Carefully performed prospective surveillance of 521 patients requiring mechanical ventilation in an ICU for more than 12 hours, demonstrating that patients with tracheostomy had a longer length of stay in the ICU and in the hospital but a favorable outcome compared to conventionally treated patients. Additionally, the study was able to identify factors for selecting patients who are most likely to benefit from tracheostomy.

In conclusion the authors described a higher prevalence for perioperative complications, including death and cardiorespiratory arrest for PDT, whereas postoperative complications were more common in surgically tracheostomized patients.
