Carefully performed prospective surveillance of 521 patients requiring mechanical ventilation in an ICU for more than 12 hours, demonstrating that patients with tracheostomy had a longer length of stay in the ICU and in the hospital but a favorable outcome compared to conventionally treated patients. Additionally, the study was able to identify factors for selecting patients who are most likely to benefit from tracheostomy.

    • 39 Dulguerov P, Gysin C, Perneger W, Chevrolet JC: Percutaneous or surgical tracheostomy: A meta-anlysis. Crit Care Med 1999, 27:1617:1625. This meta-analysis included a total of 9,517 patients from studies published in 65 articles between 1960 and 1996. In conclusion the authors described a higher prevalence for perioperative complications, including death and cardiorespiratory arrest for PDT, whereas postoperative complications were more common in surgically tracheostomized patients.
