Pressure-volume curves and compliance in acute lung injury: Evidence of recruitment above the lower inflection point

Am J Respir Crit Care Med 1999, 159:1172-1178. In this article, the low sinusoidal flow technique was used for acquisition of P-V curves in ALI patients, in order to evaluate the effect of PEEP on the alveolar recruitment. PEEP induced a reduction of chord compliance as well as a continuous recruitment far above the lower inflection point.

JAMA 1999, 282:54-61. This randomized study provides new evidence about the role of ventilator-induced lung injury and supports previous experimental data about the mechanism of the development of multisystem organ failure during mechanical ventilation in ARDS patients.
