Derrière: A TGF-β family member required for posterior development in Xenopus

The authors report the identification of a new Xenopus mesoderm-inducing TGF-β factor, Derrière, and demonstrate that it is required for the development of the trunk and tail. These results demonstrate that Derrière functions along with the Xnr genes in the regulation of mesoderm development in Xenopus.

Bix4 is activated directly by VegT and mediates endoderm formation in Xenopus development
-
The mesendodermal gene Bix4 is shown to have multiple T-box sites in its promoter. Analysis of deletion mutants of these T-box sites shows that they are important for the expression of Bix4 in the mesoderm and endoderm. In addition, ectopic expression of Bix4 is shown to rescue mesoderm formation in VegT-depleted embryos.

Signals from the yolk cell induce mesoderm, neuroectoderm, the trunk organizer, and the notochord in zebrafish
-
Genetics and embryonic manipulations are used to analyse the role of the extra-embryonic yolk cell in mesoderm induction and dorso-ventral patterning, and uncover an entirely novel role for BMP signaling in trunk-tail patterning. BMP signaling is found to suppress trunk paraxial mesoderm formation, revealing that trunk and tail fates are influenced by dorso-ventral patterning.

Tbx5 and Tbx4 genes determine the wing/leg identity of limb buds
-
•] establish an important role for these factors in the establishment of specific limb identity. Ectopic expression of either Tbx5 or Tbx4 causes transformations in fore- or hind-limb identity, at least in part through alterations in fore- or hind-limb-specific Hox gene expression.

Developmental basis of limblessness and axial patterning in snakes
-
Absence of fore-limbs in the snake is as a result of homogenisation of Hox gene expression in the trunk and the failure to form a limb bud. In contrast, the positional information for the specification of the hind-limb/cloacal region is intact, but the hind-limb bud fails to develop correctly through loss of ecto-mesenchymal interactions.
