note
-
Unlike migrant groups that can be tracked by race or surname, southern whites remain nearly invisible in census and other traditional primary sources. As a result, oral histories, local newspapers and municipal reports make up the bulk of the primary sources in this article. Because the population of Uptown (the Chicago neighborhood studied here) was more than 98 percent white, place-of-origin data from the census were particularly useful to support the oral histories.
