A comparison of enoxaparin with placebo for the prevention of venous thromboembolism in acutely ill medical patients
-
9 Samama MM, Cohen AT, Damron JY, et al.: A comparison of enoxaparin with placebo for the prevention of venous thromboembolism in acutely ill medical patients. N Engl J Med 1999, 341:793-800. This is the first placebo-controlled comparison of two different doses of low-molecular-weight heparin in medical patients. The results have provided evidence that risk-assessment in this patient population should urgently be modified and, if given, low molecular weight heparins should be administered in high-risk prophylactic doses.

Prevention of venous thromboembolism after neurosurgery
-
12 Agnelli G: Prevention of venous thromboembolism after neurosurgery. Thromb Haemost 1999, 82 (suppl):925-930. This paper reviews the epidemiology of venous thromboembolism in neurosurgery and the results of clinical trials that have studied the prevalence of this complication in this clinical setting. This overview provides comprehensive information on the results of pharmacologic and mechanical modalities of venous thromboembolism prevention, and it addresses open questions to be answered by future trials.

Edited by Sarret M, Kher A, Toulemonde F. New York: Marcel Dekker, 1999:29-246. This reference gathers the most relevant clinical studies, reviews the different pharmacokinetic properties, and assesses the therapeutic efficacy of low molecular weight heparins from 1985 to the present. The detailed compilation of study results offers a unique opportunity to form an impression of the strengths and the weaknesses of various compounds and dosing schedules.
