Treatment with trimethylsilyl chloride must be carried out in the absence of ambient moisture to ensure that the samples do not pick up excess chloride. Samples stirred in etheric solutions of excess trimethylsilyl chloride in air for 24 h can give high levels of chlorine on the surface, as detected by XPS.
