In the five years to the end of 1991, gross indebtedness on Australian farms grew 23 percent to $14.1 billion. Average farm debt grew by a third to $130,600, but equity remained relatively high at 87 percent. Debt was also, importantly, unequally distributed. A third of all broadacre farms carried no debt, while 13 percent carried over $250,000 (Newton, 1992, cited in Lawrence and Share, op. cit.).
