    • Prestin is the motor protein of cochlear outer hair cells
    • This landmark paper describes the identification of a component of the plasma-membrane motor of cochlear outer hair cells. Prestin was uncovered in an outer-hair-cell cDNA library in which cDNA clones from an inner-hair-cell library were subtracted. Additional interesting auditory-specific genes are likely to emerge from the author's work on these hair cell cDNA libraries. In the same issue there is an accompanying commentary by Matthew Holley.
