    • Coding of sound envelopes by inhibitory rebound in neurons of the superior olivary complex in the unanesthetized rabbit
    • Many single neurons in the SON of awake rabbits reveal prominent burst-like responses after the offset of a stimulus. These response patterns are probably a result of rebound from inhibition. Neurons exhibiting such responses are particularly well suited for processing the time course of changes in stimulus amplitude.

    • Responses of neurons in the inferior colliculus to dynamic interaural phase cues: Evidence for a mechanism of binaural adaptation
    • Direction-specific neuronal responses first appear at the level of the inferior colliculus in the auditory midbrain. This paper provides a careful analysis of responses of single midbrain neurons recorded from anesthetized guinea pigs. It indicates that the effects of motion direction actually do not reflect a motion direction selectivity per se. They rather reflect a relation to the previous responses of these neurons and indicate an underlying adaptation mechanism.

    • Attention modulates synchronized neuronal firing in primate somatosensory cortex
    • This study not only provides additional evidence that temporal firing patterns carry important sensory information, but also that changes of attention might be directly reflected in the firing patterns. The authors describe changes in the synchronous firing in pairs of neurons recorded in the secondary somatosensory cortex of monkeys when they switch attention between a visual task and a tactile discrimination task. Synchrony increases in most cases but also decreases in some cases.

    • Serotonin differentially modulates responses to tones and frequency-modulated sweeps in the inferior colliculus
    • Iontophoretic application of serotonin in the inferior colliculus of the Mexican free-tailed bat reveals a variety of strong effects on processing of acoustic stimuli that seem to depend on the temporal or spectral structure of the stimuli. For instance, effects on the processing of pure tones or frequency-modulated sounds differ in individual neurons. Frequency modulations cause a movement in the activity at the receptor surface of the cochlea and are, therefore, comparable to moving visual stimuli.

    • A neuronal analogue of state-dependent learning
    • This study provides evidence that acetylcholine is not only involved in learning-related plasticity of cortical neurons, but might also be necessary to re-evoke changed response properties of a single neuron. A pairing of whisker stimulation at specific vibratory frequencies with application of acetylcholine persistently changed the response of neurons in the rat barrel cortex to these frequencies. Later, the modified frequency selectivity could only be elicited in the presence of experimentally applied acetylcholine. Thus, nucleus basalis activity delivering acetylcholine to the cortex might not only be important for learning but also for recalling information.
