    • This last statement could be objected to by presenting another argument, however. It could be claimed that the road haulage firms who invested the capital needed by the shipping companies simply had in mind a reduction of their own costs in the long term, by exploiting the economies of scale in shipping which only plentiful traffic can guarantee

    • Let us consider, for example, a journey from Istanbul to Germany, trough Trieste, by the ‘normal’ Ro-Ro service (sea leg, 72 hours). After having loaded the complete vehicle (tractor and semi-trailer) onto the vessel at the Turkish port, the drivers can enjoy 2 days of freedom, or be available for other activities, before catching the flight to Ljubljana. From the airport they will be transported by hired coaches to the port of Trieste where they will be able to pick up their lorries which will have arrived after 3 days at sea, from here they can then depart for their ultimate destination, for example Germany

    • This size, at least with the current state of technology, is to be considered the upper limit, since larger vessels would create problems with overly long loading and unloading times

    • looking at the agreements relating to the passage through Austria undertaken by UND on behalf of the transport companies, it is worth remembering in the field of road permits the outlining of a new ratio of exchange (1/1) between road permits granted and round trips carried on the ROLA. This in turn caused, through the use of ROLA, a larger general availability of road permits for those Turkish road hauliers who do not use ROLA

The aim is to develop an East–West transport corridor, as an alternative to the Russian route. The intention is, among other reasons, to support the political autonomy and the economic development of the Caucasic states

    • It is interesting to note that UND itself, in the last Annual Report (p. 27) explicitly predicts that the number of foreign lorries using Ro-Ro routes will grow over the next few years. Particular reference was made to lorry fleets from Iraq (after recovering their relations with EU) and the Caucasic republics (Azerbaijan, Kazhakstan, Turkmenistan). These areas are rich in natural resources (petrol, other raw materials) which, once exploited, will constitute the basis for a general economic development and, therefore, promote the intense flows of goods
