According to CSST survey (CSST, 1997, Prospettive del trasporto merci a medio e lungo termine in Italia. Centro Studi sui Sistemi di Trasporto) its global value is estimated at ∼290 000 billion lire, of which 48.2% (139 000 billion lire) concerns activities other than transport, while as regards transport (51.8% or 150 000 billion lire) ∼35% is generated by road transport, 15.2% by maritime transport, 1.1% by air, 0.6% by rail and 0.04% by river and pipelines
