Kazuhiro Watanabe was born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1953. He received his B.E., M.E, and D.E. degrees in electrical engineering from Keio University, Yokohama, Japan, in 1976, 1978, and 1981, respectively. From April 1981 to March 1991, he was with the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Defense Academy, Yokosuka, Japan, where he was engaged in developments of high power gas lasers. In April 1991 he moved to the Department of Information Systems Science, Soka University, Tokyo, Japan, as an associate Professor, and in 1996, he became a Professor there. He is currently working in the fields of applications of mid-infrared lasers as information instruments, development of fiber optic sensors and other image sensors for damage monitoring and robot navigation, and laser scanning visualization. He is a member of the Japan Society of Applied Physics, the Laser Society of Japan, the Robotics Society of Japan, and the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers. Knori Tajima was born in Yokohama, Japan, in 1975. She received her B.E. degree in information systems science from Soka University, Tokyo, Japan, in 1997. She is now working on a hetero-core type fiber optic sensor and its application, toward her M.E. degree at Soka University. Yuzuru Kubota was born in Hokkaido, Japan, in 1939. He received his B.E. degree in mechanical engineering from Muroran Institute of Technology, Muroran, Japan, in 1963. He also received his M.E., and D.E. degrees in precision engineering from Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan, in 1965, and 1968, respectively. In 1968 he joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Muroran Institute of Technology as assistant professor. He became an Associate Professor there. In 1992, he moved to Soka University as a Professor of the Department of Information Systems Science, where he has been engaged in research on robot control and navigation, optic and image sensors for robots. He is a member of the Robotics Society of Japan, the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers, and the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.
