    • On research and development various formal statements are found in the chapter on cost theory under Action variables outside the area of production. They comment on the possibility of altering the quality of deployment factors, production procedures and products through research and development efforts; on the necessity for periodic delimitation of distribution; and on the fact that a considerable portion of production costs is predetermined in the R&D phase [16,p.218].

    • The data concerning Tabor Manufacturing Co. (Philadelphia) is based on the situation on 1.1.1912 [26,p.33]. At this point in time 48 foremen and managers and 48 workers were employed in the whole enterprise. In the plant alone the ratio of managers/foremen to workers was 28 to 45. This ratio was described as unusually high and was the result of the circumstance that in spite of the bad economic situation it was workers who lost their jobs first. A figure of 1:3 was said to be average for firms operating according to the Taylor system.

    • Transaction costs theory in its modern form may be traced back primarily to the work of Williamson, who systemized and extended the foundation laid by Coase, R.H. (1937) [49]. Williamson is also seen as the main representative of so-called 'new institutionalism': he thoroughly investigated the circumstances in which transactions are divorced from the market price mechanism and dealt with in the framework of a hierarchical organizational form, and vice versa. Williamson and other later representatives of the transaction costs approach work explicitly from the viewpoint that market and enterprise merely represent two extremes of a many-levelled continuum of different forms of coordination [53].

    • The ETH Zurich is at present structured into Departments and Divisions. The Departments, which are allocated a body of personnel, financial and infrastructure resources, firstly carry out the research task of the ETH Zurich. Secondly, with the same resources, they carry out the university's teaching task, which is formally structured into course-specific Divisions.
