Vural Savaş, the head prosecutor of Turkey's constitutional court (Yargitay) was not impressed with the more moderate line of the VT. On 7 October 1998 he stated, 'If they [VT] receive 99.9 percent of the vote, I will still shut it down ... just like the wp, we will shut it down', Hurriyet, 8 October 1998. Savaş had still more to gloat about: in October the appeal court ruled that Abdullah Gül, the secretary general of the VT, had to pay Savaş 1.5 million lira for insulting the prosecutor's character. Hurriyat, 17 October 1998 .
