    • All heteroaryl iodonium triflates have been fully characterised by multinuclear nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, and high-resolution mass spectrometry, and/or microanalysis. Iodonium salts 2a, b and 3a, b are stable solids that could be kept for months under ambient conditions in the dark. As solids or in solution, the iodonium salts slowly decompose when exposed to light.

    • Unlike in the case of the closed aperture experiments, the refractive index change due to localized heating does not affect the open-aperture experiments because the open-aperture experiment is insensitive to phase distortion of the beam. In addition, the influence of TPA-induced excited state absorption, which leads the localized heating, can be ruled out for the open-aperture experiments because the magnitude of the measured TPA coefficient was independent of the incident intensity.
