All heteroaryl iodonium triflates have been fully characterised by multinuclear nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, and high-resolution mass spectrometry, and/or microanalysis. Iodonium salts 2a, b and 3a, b are stable solids that could be kept for months under ambient conditions in the dark. As solids or in solution, the iodonium salts slowly decompose when exposed to light.

note

Unlike in the case of the closed aperture experiments, the refractive index change due to localized heating does not affect the open-aperture experiments because the open-aperture experiment is insensitive to phase distortion of the beam. In addition, the influence of TPA-induced excited state absorption, which leads the localized heating, can be ruled out for the open-aperture experiments because the magnitude of the measured TPA coefficient was independent of the incident intensity.
