    • 2. These experiments demonstrate that the macrocyclic structure is a prerequisite for attaining the dramatic color changes observed. We are investigating the possibility of the role of sugar (beyond simple boronate ester formation and hydrogen bonding; e.g., furfural or other sugar-derived aldehyde condensation) reactions with 1 or oxidized, potentially ring-opened 1. In addition, comparative studies of the coloration process employing 1 and simple aliphatic and aromatic diols vs other hydoxy compounds, reducing vs nonreducing sugars, and ketoses vs aldoses in buffered solutions are in progress.
