7. All chemicals were purchased from Tokyo Chemical Industry (purity >98%) and used without further purification. The STM measurements were carried out by PicoSPM (Molecular Imaging) controlled with Nanoscope E (Digital Instrument) in a homemade cell filled with neat alkane. The STM tip was made of Pt/Ir (8:2) wire sharpened by mechanical cutting. The substrate was a Au(111) facet that was subjected to the flame-annealing treatment before use.
