In the absence of SO effects, isolated, coordinatively unsaturaled cations with low-lying empty orbitals tend to exhibit large paramagnetic contributions to the central-atom chemical shifts. These are dimished by donation into the empty orbitals due to counteranions and/or solvent molecules, leading usually to lower shifts.
