Although the rDNA locus is universally conserved among cellular life, the breadth of a pathogen search can be "tuned" by selecting different consensus primers. Given these constraints and features, the small subunit rDNA is as useful as any locus and is more useful than most loci in providing reliable phylogenetic information.
