    • General procedure for the cleavage of ketones to acids: Each ketone (0.5 mmol) was added to a suspension of finely ground KOH (150 mg, 2.7 mmol) in DMF (12 mL) and gradually heated to 65-68 °C. A Drierite-filled trap was used to exclude moisture. After 3 hours an additional amount of KOH (130 mg, 2.3 mmol) was added and heating was continued for another 12 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled, diluted with water (50 mL) and extracted with methylene chloride (3× 20 mL) to remove nonpolar material. The water layer was acidified with HCl to pH 1 and extracted with methylene chloride (3× 20 mL) to yield the acid. The product was purified by radial chromatography, sublimation, or recrystallisation.
