The process of transfer of surfactant tails between the reference state of the molecules (bulk aqueous environment) and the Gibbs monolayer involves the use of an intermediate state corresponding to bulk hydrocarbon.9 The configurational free energy describes the transfer of tails from bulk hydrocarbon to the confined environment of the interface.
