This case report describes a patient affected by persistent corneal epithelial defect associated with corneal anesthesia. Complete epithelial healing was achieved after 2 weeks of topical treatment with a combination of substance P and insulin-like growth factor-1.

N Engl J Med 1998, 338:1174-1180. The authors performed an open, noncontrolled, clinical study on 14 cases of neurotrophic corneal ulcer that did not respond to standard treatment. All ulcers completely healed after 2 to 6 weeks of topical treatment with NGF. During the 1 -year follow-up period, improvements in corneal sensitivity and visual acuity were seen. No relapse or local or systemic side effects were noted during treatment or follow-up.
