The population figure for the late seventeenth century is estimated from the Compton census of 1671 (William Salt Library, Stafford, M.S. Salt 33), and also from the Hearth Tax of 1665 (Public Record Office, hereafter PRO, Exchequer K.R., Lay Subsidy Rolls, E179/176/565). Those for 1811 and 1841 are from the census returns, respectively PRO C2/49 and HO/107/395.

The circumstances influencing the rise in status of the Hazell family are not known. It would appear that in the late sixteenth century the widow of John Hazell inherited his property and left his estate to her second son who became a yeoman farmer. His son had no heirs.
