You Ji also indicates that "the non-binding resolution of US Congress that American soldiers would be involved in defending Taiwan if it was attacked can be explained only by their belief (or they were told), that China would not launch any real invasion. Otherwise it was inconsistent with the Congress's traditional opposition to sacrificing American lives for something that did not affect immediate US interests."
