    • General experimental procedure. Acetal (1 mmole) was dissolved in 2 mL 10 % methanol. CAN in 8 mL 10 % methanol was added to it dropwise with constant stirring at room temperature. The reaction mixture was diluted with water (10 min. after the addition of CAN) and extracted with dichloromethane. The dichloromethane layer was washed with saturated brine and dehydrated using anhyd. sodium sulphate, filtered and the solvent was evaporated off. The residue on column chromatography using silica-gel (5 % ethyl acetate-hexane mixture) afforded the corresponding aldehyde or ketone.
