    • We initially used a thin wire placed 5 cm downstream from the oven as a shield for the trapped atoms. This proved very useful in our first observations of the trap as it provided a dark stripe in the background fluorescence against which to view the (not yet optimized) trapped sample. Subsequent removal of the wire doubled the loading rate.
