A reviewer of this paper has recommended the use of an object that has a combination of translucent and opaque parts as one that would be easier to view and thus be more suitable for beginning students. We used the semitransparent reticles in these experiments because they were the type that Gabor used, and we leave it to the readers to try the combination suggested above.

A reviewer of this paper, who provided us with Refs. 4-8 above, informed us that these references show that the lens equation correctly predicts the location of the holographic image for a broader class of holograms than the simple "on-axis" type that we employed. We encourage the readers to try a broad range of such experiments.

A reviewer of this paper also suggests that we point out the Abramson ray tracing technique as another procedure for locating holographic image locations. We would also like to point out that in our private discussions with holography experts, who were well informed of the Abramson method, they were mildly surprised and delighted to see the validity of the simple lens equation for in-line holograms.
