    • Synthetic filaments are usually produced by extruding molten polymer through fine holes in a spinneret. Subsequent processes may be necessary to convert these filaments into textile fibres. For extrusion - and any additional processes - to be successful, it is essential that the complex physical and chemical properties of the polymer melt are maintained.

    • Cotton fibre lengths can range from 7/8″ to as much as 1 1/2″ (22-38 mm), although the bulk of the world's cotton crop yields fibres between 1″ and 1 1/4″ (25-32 mm) long. Flax fibres produced by traditional methods are much longer, varying between 12″ and 30″ (300-750 mm) in length.

    • Silicone treatments are sometimes used to lubricate yarns during knitting. They are also used to make fabrics water repellent and to soften them.
