    • Key statistical characteristics of the healthy cardiac dynamics can be successfully reproduced by a stochastic nonlinear feedback mechanism [28]. The present observation of sleep-wake scaling differences poses a new challenge to such modeling approaches, which could require considering reciprocity in the activity of the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system during sleep and wake phases, as well as different correlation times of the sympathetic and parasympathetic impulses.
