    • Quality of life for ventilator-dependent ALS patients and their caregivers
    • Gelinas DF, O'Connor, Miller RG: Quality of life for ventilator-dependent ALS patients and their caregivers. J Neuro Sci 1998, 160(suppl 1):S134-S136. A brief review of the problems with assessing the quality of life of ventilator-dependent patients emphasizes that standard assessment tools are difficult to adapt to severely debilitated patients. In this article, caregivers' frustrations with the circumstances of long-term ventilator dependency are also discussed.

    • Raphael JC, Chevet S, et al,: Randomized trial of preventive nasal ventilation in Duschenne muscular dystrophy. Lancet 1994, 343:1600-1604. Compelling evidence that proactive application of ventilator support to asymptomatic patients does not prolong life is presented. This article could be the cornerstone for future research that will define standards for more exact timing in the institution of respiratory system maintenance.

    • Clinical indications for noninvasive positive pressure ventilation in chronic lung disease, COPD and nocturnal hypoventilation: A consensus conference report
    • Clinical indications for noninvasive positive pressure ventilation in chronic lung disease, COPD and nocturnal hypoventilation: a consensus conference report. Chest 1999, 116:521-534. A consensus statement for the use of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) underscores the importance of performing multichannel sleep studies to detect associated sleep apnea in patients with neuromuscular disease and clinical course compatible with sleep apnea. Physiologic criteria for use of NIPPV are listed but represent only consensus. The participants clearly sight the need for quality randomized, controlled clinical trials to define further the physiologic indicators and proper timing of intervention with NIPPV.
