    • Iam Choon Khoo K(Fellow, IEEE) was born in Penang, Malaysia, in 1949. He received the B.S. degree in physics (First Class Honors) from the University of Malaya in 1971 and the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Rochester, NY, in 1973 and 1976, respectively. He is currently a Professor of Electrical Engineering at Pennsylvania State University, University Park. His current research interests are in liquid crystals nonlinear optics and electrooptics, optical sensor protection, and nonlinear optics. Dr. Khoo is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America, a member of the Society for Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE), and a Fellow of the U.K. Institute of Physics. Min-Yi Shih was born in Taiwan in 1970. He received the B.S. degree in physics from Tam-Kang University in 1992. He is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree in the Electrical Engineering Department, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA. From 1994 to 1996, he had been a Research Assistant in the Materials Science Center of National Tsing-Hua University, Taiwan. His scientific research activity is focused on the study of optical nonlinear properties of liquid crystals. Michael V. Wood was born in 1971 in Kittaning, PA. He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering in 1993 and 1997, respectively, from Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA. He is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering at Pennsylvania State University. During the course of his studies he has done research at Pennsylvania State University and at Phillips Laboratory, Kirtland AFB. His graduate work has focused on the nonlinear optical properties of liquid crystal materials with a focus on electrooptical phenomena and passive optical limiting effects. Brett D. Guenther (Member, IEEE) was born on December 15, 1968 in Huntsville, AL. He received the B.E.E degree from Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, in 1992 and the M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. degrees in 1995 and 1998, respectively, from Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA. He is currently with Raytheon Missile Systems Company, Tucson, AZ. His current research interests include novel, low-cost phased array antenna systems. Pao Hsu Chen was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan in 1971. He received the B.S. degree in electrophysics from National Chiao-Tung University, Taiwan, in 1994 and the M.S. degree in electrical engineering from Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA. He is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree at Pennsylvania State University. His specific field of research is the study of nonlinear absorption and photorefractive effects of liquid crystals. Mr. Chen is a member of the Optical Society of America (OSA). Francesco Simoni was born in Bologna, Italy, in 1949. He received the Laurea degree in physics from the University of Rome, Italy, in 1973. He has been Associate Professor at the University of Dalabria and at the University of Naples. Since 1994 he has been a Full Professor of Physics at the Department of Materials Sciences, University of Ancona, Italy. His research activity has been focused on nonlinear optics of condensed matter, and he is presently devoted to the study of liquid crystalline and polymeric materials. He is a Regional Editor of Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals. Mr. Simoni was elected President of the Italian Liquid Crystal Society in 1998. Sergei S. Slussarenko was born in Minsk, Belarus, in 1955. He received the Diploma of Physics in optics and spectroscopy in 1977 from Kharkov State University and the Ph.D. degree in laser physics in 1990 from the Institute of Physics, Kiev, Ukraine. From 1977 to 1981, he was a Researcher at the Department of Radiophysics, Kharkov State University. Since 1981 he has been a Researcher at the Institute of Physics, Optical Quantum Electronics Department, Ukrainian Science Academy, Kiev. He was a Visiting Researcher at Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, in 1997 and at Ancona University, Italy, from 1995 to the present. His scientific research activity has been focused on nonlinear optics of liquid crystals, photorefractivity, dynamic holography, phase conjugation oscillators.
