The steady work of the Board of Agriculture for Scotland (BOAS) had ensured that the number of blackhouses on government owned land had fallen markedly since the turn of the century. For example, at the Kilmuir estate on Skye between 1904 and 1929 the number of thatched houses dropped from 336 to 137, and the number of modern stone-built houses with slated roofs increased from 20 to 304.
