This model shows that conformational isomerism around the α, β-carbon-carbon single bond in the aspartate can lead to hydrogen bonding of the carboxylate to the protonated amino group both in compounds (1) and (2) as shown below. As reported in ref. 4, minor changes in the backbone conformation of the protein are also observed. (formula presented)
