8. An American officer who met Lebed on several occasions recalls a conversation about Lebed's son's desire to join the airborne even though he wore glasses. Lebed had told him that his eyesight precluded a military career, but the boy persisted and was accepted by an officers' school of the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. When the boy informed his father of this turn of events, Lebed struck him and knocked his glasses from his face, saying that ended any discussion of a military career.
