Is the different T helper cell activity in sarcoidosis and extrinsic allergic alveolitis also reflected by the cellular bronchoalveolar lavage fluid profile?
-
+ T lymphocytes as such does not distinguish between sarcoidosis and extrinsic allergic alveolitis, these results suggest that the cytokine expression, predominately of the Th1 or Th2 type, is an important additional determinant of these respective disorders.

Experimental hypersensitivity pneumonitis: Location of transferring cells
-
Schuyler M, Gott K, Fei R, Edwards B: Experimental hypersensitivity pneumonitis: Location of transferring cells. Lung 1998, 176:213-225. Cells capable of transfer are transiently (1 h) trapped in the lung but are much decreased in the lung by 4 days after transfer. After intratracheal challenge of recipients, there is a substantial increase in the number of pulmonary cells in animals exhibiting adoptive experimental hypersensitivity pneumonitis, but not in the control groups.

Interferon-γ is necessary for the expression of hypersensitivity pneumonitis
-
Gudmundsson G, Hunninghake GW: Interferon-γ is necessary for the expression of hypersensitivity pneumonitis. J Clin Invest 1997, 99:2386-2390. IFN-γ knockout mice developed minimal inflammation and no granulomas after exposure to Saccharopolyspora rectivirgula. When given replacement IFN-γ, the mice developed granulomatous inflammation in the lung. These studies show that IFN-γ is essential for the expression of hypersensitivity pneumonitis.

IL-12 modulates expression of hypersensitivity pneumonitis
-
Gudmundsson G, Monick MM, Hunninghake GW: IL-12 modulates expression of hypersensitivity pneumonitis. J Immunol 1998, 161:991-999. The strain of mice that were sensitive to Saccharopolyspora rectivirgula had a significantly greater antigen-induced increase in IL-12 and IFN-γ gene expression, compared with the resistant strain. The resistant strain resembled the sensitive strain if they received IL-12 augmentation therapy at the time of antigen exposure. These results suggest that the IL-12 response to antigen may modulate, in part, the expression of HP.

Interleukin-10 modulates the severity of hypersensitivity pneumonitis in mice
-
Gudmundsson G, Bosch A, Davidson BL, Berg DJ, Hunninghake GW: Interleukin-10 modulates the severity of hypersensitivity pneumonitis in mice. Am J Respir Cell Mol Biol 1998, 19:812-818. When the IL-10 knockout mice were exposed to Saccharopolyspora rectivirgula, there was increased upregulation of IFN-γ, IL-1, and TNF-alpha mRNAs in the lungs of the mice. Adenovirus-mediated gene transfer of IL-10 to the liver of IL-10 knockout mice reduced the inflammation from that seen in control mice.

Nishiura Y, Nakagawa-Yoshida K, Suga M, Shinoda T, Gueho E, Ando M: Assignment and serotyping of Trichosporon species, the causative agents of summer-type hypersensitivity pneumonitis. J Med Vet Mycol 1997, 35:45-52. The Trichosporon agents of summer-type HP were identified according to the new taxonomy, and T. asahii and T. mucoides appeared to be the major causative agents of the disease.

Effects of erythromycin on experimental extrinsic allergic alveolitis
-
Miyajima M, Suga M, Nakagawa K, Ito K, Ando M: Effects of erythromycin on experimental extrinsic allergic alveolitis. Clin Exp Allergy 1999, 29:253-261. In murine experimental hypersensitivity pneumonitis developed by intratracheal inoculation with particulate Trichosporon mucoides, erythromycin markedly decreased neutrophils in the lung and skin lesions and myeloperoxidase in the lung, simultaneously with inhibiting intercellular adhesion molecule-1 expression. Josamycin had no effects on the model.
