Neuron 1997, 19:503-517. Reports that NT3 expression restricted to muscles is sufficient to support the development and projection of la afferents. The level of NT3 determines the number of surviving proprioceptive neurons. In myo-NT3-containing null mutant NT3 mice, the majority of nonproprioceptive neurons are missing, suggesting that an earlier and/or other source of NT3 is required for their development.

Development 1997, 124:2603-2613. Reports that ectopic over-expression of NT3 in spinal cord and DRG results in inappropriate peripheral and central projections of la afferents. This implies that in addition to NT3's role as a peripheral survival factor, NT3 is also important within the DRG and spinal cord for the establishment of appropriate la projections to motor neurons and muscles.
