1. As an example of this trend, the University of Pittsburgh operates federally supported interdisciplinary centers for Asian Studies, Latin American Studies, East European Studies, and West European Studies. They are organized under the University Center for International Studies and have significant programmatic influence over the curriculum and research programs in many fields. Some of these structures are 40 years old.

In 1996, the East Asian Library at the University of Pittsburgh and Peking University Library launched a document delivery project to share materials electronically between their collections using the Internet. In 1997, this project grew into a consortium of five libraries on two sides of the Pacific to exchange digital copies of journal publications, with funding provided by the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation. The success of this project led to a National Leadership Grant award from the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services in 1998.
