Making chemistry selectable by linking it to infectivity
-
Gao C, Lin CH, Lo CHL, Mao S, Wirsching P, Lerner RA, Janda KD: Making chemistry selectable by linking it to infectivity. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1997, 94:11777-11782. Linking genotype to phenotype is essential for evolution. Here, phage infectivity requires a catalytically active protein to be fused to the gene III protein. The authors were only able to detect single turnover events, but the technique represents a potential way to screen large libraries for novel catalytic function.
