Hum Mol Genet 1998, 7:13-26. A sequence of 36 kb contains three OR-like sequences, one of which may be functional. This 36 kb block is repeated polymorphically at various subtelomeric sites. This is an unususal case of genomic variation.

Genomics 1999, 56:98-110. A 250 kb genomic region reveals four OR pseudogenes. Additionally a pseudogene of myosin light chain kinase is in the immediate vicinity. This is the first example of a non-OR-like sequence embedded within or adjacent to an OR cluster.

    • Trask BJ, Massa H, Brand-Arpon V, Chan K, Friedman C, Nguyen OT, Eichler E, van den Engh G, Rouquier S, Shizuya H, Giorgi D: Large multi-chromosomal duplications encompass many members of the olfactory receptor gene family in the human genome. Hum Mol Genet 1998, 7:2007-2020. A large-scale effort resulted in the isolation of 74 OR containing cosmids and BACs. Mapping by FISH revealed that many BACs hybridize at multiple sites. Intergenic regions apparently have extensive sequence homology with other regions in the genome which means that OR pseudogenes may not have arisen through retrotransposition but by divergence from duplicated clusters.

    • Functional expression of a mammalian odorant receptor
    • Zhao H, Ivic L, Otaki JM, Hashimoto M, Mikoshiba K, Firestein S: Functional expression of a mammalian odorant receptor. Science 1998, 279:237-242. Adenovirally-mediated gene transfer was here used to ectopically express the rat OR l7 in a large fraction of rat OSNs. Transepithelial potentials over broad areas of the infected epithelium were measured as a readout for receptor activation. A restricted set of short-chain aliphatic aldehydes were found to stimulate the infected cells, particularly octyl aldehyde. This paper is the first demonstration that the OR genes, isolated in 1991 by Buck and Axel [4], indeed encode receptors for odorants.
