Synaptic segregation at the developing neuromuscular junction
-
Gan WB, Lichtman JW: Synaptic segregation at the developing neuromuscular junction. Science 1998, 282:1508-1511. This study uses Dil or DiO labeling of motor axons at the neuromuscular junction to give a greater understanding of morphological changes during the period of naturally occurring synapse elimination. Axons were observed to segregate before final withdrawal. Concomitant with the segregation, small atrophic branches were observed near the territory of the competing axon. This experiment suggests that the signal mediating competition within the postsynaptic cell decreases rapidly with distance.

Nguyen QT, Parsadanian AS, Snider WD, Lichtman JW: Hyperinnervation of neuromuscular junctions caused by GDNF overexpression in muscle. Science 1998, 279:1725-1729. Evidence that a growth factor (GDNF) alters the number of motor axonal branches that converge at developing neuromuscular junctions.
