    • The ennoblement of stainless steel in seawater: A likely explanation coming from the field
    • Using experimental data, a mechanism for microbial ennoblement is proposed based on the action of enzymes trapped within a biofilm. It is shown that ennoblement is reversibly stopped on the addition of sodium azide, a reversible enzyme inhibitor, but gluteraldyhyde has no effect on ennoblement

    • Microbiologically influenced stress corrosion cracking failure of admiralty brass condenser tubes in a nuclear power plant cooled by freshwater
    • Careful microbial analysis of condenser tubes that had failed by stress corrosion cracking was used to suggest a microbial involvement with this corrosion mechanism. It was proposed that microbial nitrate reduction led to the localized production of ammonia, which is known to cause stress corrosion cracking of admiralty brass

    • The metal reducing bacterium Shewanella putrefaciens was shown to be able to reduce solid iron (III) oxide to soluble iron (II) oxide. This removal of the iron (III) oxide promoted the fresh oxidation of metal and hence corrosion. The corrosion pits were shown to correlate with the location of microbial colonies
