    • Met and fitting of L1 protein
    • Met complex at 15 Å resolution, the highest resolution cryo-EM map of the 70S ribosome published so far, computed from approximately 30,000 single particles. The position of the P-site tRNA in this complex was determined with an estimated accuracy of 1-2 Å. In addition to several new structural features, this map presents the first fit of the atomic structure of a ribosomal protein, L1, with the corresponding cryo-EM density and shows many strand-like structures that can be assigned to rRNA segments.

This paper presents the 9 Å resolution X-ray crystallographic map of the 60S ribosomal subunit from H. marismortui, an archaebacterium. At this resolution, the map shows signatures of rRNA secondary structures. Many strandlike structures, with right-handed twists and a diameter of dsRNA, can be tentatively interpreted as being segments of rRNA.

Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1998, 95:6134-6138. This paper describes the first 3D visualization of EF-G on the 70S ribosome in a 70S-EF-G-GDP-fusidic acid complex. A comparison of the portion of the cryo-EM map corresponding to EF-G with its crystal structure [51,52] reveals a conformational change in EF-G that takes place upon its binding to the ribosome. The proximal positions of EF-G domains to the various structural features of the ribosome and their crucial roles in translocation are discussed.
