The reader who is skeptical would be correct to observe that nothing can be proved with statistics. Similarly, a map of Missouri cannot be used to prove that St. Louis is located on the eastern border of the state at the confluence of two rivers. However, the map would be easily acceptable as a predictor of direction for a traveler destined for that city. In a related way, ordinary least squares regression analysis provides a powerful predictor of outcomes, helping us to understand what factors result in particular conditions
