    • We note that it is important to distinguish between structures identified by the different diagnostic methods. All structures are composite under the genus "coherent structures," but for a graduation the following convention is introduced. The probe array records density fluctuations on a one-dimensional azimuthal circle of the plasma column. Consequently, the structures are "spatiotemporal" with only one space dimension and one time dimension. Structures detected by conditional averaging are termed "conditional structures" or "conditional eddies" because, even though they are localized, the influence of the averaging method is not clear.
